Weaving Worlds Together is a collaborative student art project initiated by Toronto-based textile artist and educator Patricia Phelan in conjunction with the Textile Museum of Canada’s exhibition Ancestry and Artistry: Maya Textiles from Guatemala. This project provided an opportunity to link a group of students in a Canadian classroom with students in a Guatemalan classroom, creating artwork that explores the theme of identity.
Using various textile techniques of dyeing, applique, embroidery, painting and weaving, the students created cloth renderings of their sense of what it means to be Canadian and Guatemalan. The projects from both the classrooms will be on display for 7 months at the Textile Museum and then they will exchange their textile creations as gifts to each other and as a testament to their cross cultural partnership.
