Patricia Phelan is a Toronto based artist and workshop animator who
believes handwork connects us to nature and to one another. She has been weaving for the past 25
years and enjoys exploring complex weaving structures on a simple backstrap
loom. For example she weaves Guatemalan brocade, Peruvian pick-up including
Andean dual-lease, discontinuous warp and tubular weaving, silk warp painting
and Mexican gauze weaving.
She has also adapted backstrap techniques to weave Celtic knotwork designs as a tribute to her grandfather who was also a weaver. Patricia strives to keep alive and pass on to the next generation the
timeless practice of traditional cloth making techniques. She teaches textile art in the Toronto
District School Board, exhibits and demonstrates her work at the Textile
Museum of Canada and specializes in custom made textile designs, commissions, workshops and private lessons.
